As designers we use it whenever we are in need of dummy text. Either for mock-ups or as a substitute for the final text still to come. Lorem ipsum may look like gibberish – and sometimes it is just that because the original text has been altered over time – but it is rooted in a Latin text more that 2000 years old.
The version quoted below – originally bundled with the Aldus PageMaker software in the late 1980s – is no longer true to the “standard” passage used by printers and typesetters from the 16th century forward. We only care academically, of course.
